Chinese 

Chinese I

Prerequisite: None

A basic Chinese language course designed for learners with no previous background to enable them to communicate accurately and appropriately in everyday social interactions, including greetings, introducing oneself and others, thanking, apologizing, complimenting, giving and asking for information, etc., with emphasis on listening and speaking skills. Introduction of Chinese phonetic system and basic Chinese grammatical concepts so as to enable the learners to monitor their own language production.

 

Chinese II       
 Prerequisite: 203401 Chinese I
Continuation of Chinese I for beginners, aiming at helping learners to acquire three language skills of listening, speaking, and reading needed for common social interactions in different situations, including telephoning, making appointments, asking for and giving directions, shopping, traveling, etc.  Introduction of the structure and characteristics of the Chinese characters as well as more complicated grammatical concepts to enable the learners to comprehend simple reading texts and monitor their own language production.

 

 Prerequisite: 203402 Chinese II

Continuation of Chinese II, aiming at helping learners to acquire the four language skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing needed for common social interactions in different situations.  Introduction of more Chinese characters and more complicated grammatical structures to enable the learners to comprehend simple reading texts and monitor their own language production.

 

Business Chinese I    

Prerequisite: 203403 Chinese III or Consent of School

A course for intermediate level learners of Chinese who want to acquire linguistic skills in Chinese business communication and to improve their ability to use the language for business and trade interactions in different situations, including business contacts, business visits, business transactions, etc. by learning Chinese language structure, useful daily and common expressions in business setting, background knowledge information about Chinese and international business culture and etiquette, etc.

 

 Business Chinese II

Prerequisite: 203404 Business Chinese I or Consent of School

Continuation of Business Chinese I, aiming at helping learners to acquire language skills needed for business and trade interactions in different situations, including business banquets, business trip-related activities, negotiating business transactions, business cooperation, international trade fairs, etc.  Introduction to more complicated Chinese grammar, business culture and appropriate etiquette needed for effective and appropriate communication.

Japanese

Prerequisite: None
To develop students’ beginner level communication abilities such as listening, speaking and reading, deepening their understanding of Japanese language and
culture and fostering a positive attitude toward communication through Japanese
language. Especially, to enable students to understand the speaker’s intentions when
listening to Japanese.

Prerequisite: Japanese I
To develop students’ elementary level communication abilities such as listening, speaking, reading and Hiragana writing, deepening their understanding of
Japanese communication. Especially, to enable students to talk about their own thoughts using Japanese.

203413 Japanese III 3(3-0-6)
Prerequisite: Japanese II
To develop students’ JLPT N5 (CEFR A1) level communication abilities such as
listening, speaking, reading and Kanji writing, deepening their understanding of
Japanese grammar. Especially, to accustom and familiarize students with reading Japanese and to
enable them to understand the writer’s intentions when reading Japanese.

203414 Business Japanese I 3(3-0-6)
Prerequisite: Japanese III or Consent of School
To develop students’ communication abilities such as accurately understanding
and appropriately conveying information and ideas, deepening their
understanding of Business Japanese language and Japanese Business culture, and fostering a positive attitude toward communication through Business
Japanese languages. Especially, to accustom and familiarize students with type writing in Business
Japanese and to enable them to write about their own thoughts using Business
Japanese.

To develop students’ JLPT N4 (CEFR A2) level communication abilities such as
accurately understanding and appropriately conveying information and ideas, deepening their understanding of Business Japanese language and Japanese Business culture, and fostering a positive attitude toward communication through
Business Japanese languages. Especially, to accustom and familiarize students with speaking in Business
Japanese and to enable them to speak about their own thoughts using Business
Japanese.

 

Vietnamese

 

 Vietnamese I            

Prerequisite: None

Practice in basic communication for everyday use i.e. greetings, introducing oneself, thanks, apologies, asking for and giving information etc.      ;emphasis on listening and speaking skills; study of phonological systems and basic grammar for autonomous learning.

 

 Vietnamese II         

Prerequisite: Vietnamese I

Practice in listening and speaking for communication in different situations e.g. making phone calls, appointments, asking for and giving directions, buying things, traveling; studying  the structure and alphabet of Vietnamese, and learning complex Vietnamese grammar; practice in reading short simple texts.

 

Vietnamese III         

Prerequisite: Vietnamese II

Development of speaking and listening skills in Vietnamese for business communication using polite forms in natural contexts; study of cultural aspects form various contents e.g. advertisements, songs, movies, and selected excerpts from well-known literature for language appreciation.

Korean

 

Korean I  

Prerequisite: None

Communicative skills for everyday life; engagement in basic conversation in different situations; study of the sound and writing systems, types of vocabulary, and basic grammar; exposure to the culture through learning materials

 

Korean II                  

Prerequisite: Korean I

Integrated practice of listening, speaking, reading and writing; engagement in conversation in more varied situations; study of more complex grammar and sentences; emphasis on correct and proper use of language; exposure to the culture through learning materials

 

Korean III      

Prerequisite: Korean II

Development of listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills; engagement in workplace communication such as in service industries and in conversation with tourists; emphasis on correct and proper use of language; exposure to the culture through learning materials
